Volkswagen AG's Audi unit may develop a range of high-performance electric sedans and crossover vehicles to complement its upcoming R8 e-tron supercar, according to Reuters.

The news service cites unnamed sources who say one possible future EV is an electric version of the Audi Q8 crossover, which could compete with the Tesla Model X crossover due in about one year.

Analysts say Audi, like other carmakers, is closely monitoring the EV market to determine when and if to jump in. Market researcher Frost & Sullivan predicts the global market for EVs will reach 2.7 million units by 2018 from 180,000 in 2013.

Reuter's sources say Audi has specified a driving range of 400 km per charge about the same as Tesla's Model S EV for any electric vehicles it develops.
