Audi AG may bring the Allroad wagon variant of the A6 midsize sedan back to the U.S. after a 15-year hiatus, Car and Driver reports.

Company officials confirm such a plan is under consideration. But they offer no timeframe for a decision or U.S. relaunch for the model.

The latest A6 Allroad, which is based on the eighth-generation A6 sedan, is currently being introduced in Europe. The rugged Allroad gets a nearly two inches taller ride height, standard all-wheel drive, hill-descent control and an adjustable air suspension. Additional black cladding and other styling cues help differentiate the vehicle.

The European A6 Allroad offers a variety of diesel engines, but C&D speculates that a U.S. version likely would instead use Audi’s turbocharged 3.0-liter gasoline V-6. That engine makes 335 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Rumors have circulated for years about American-spec Allroaders. But currently the only such model Audi offers in the U.S. is for the smaller A4. The A6 Allroad would likely start at more than $60,000 in the U.S., competing against the Mercedes E450 and Volvo V90 Cross Country.
