Volkswagen AG’s Audi unit continues to evaluate the potential for a new mid-engine sports car based on Porsche’s Boxster/Cayman chassis.

If approved, the vehicle would be called the R6 and be available in both coupe and convertible body styles, Germany’s AutoBild reports. The enthusiast magazine, which doesn’t cite its sources, notes that there is plenty of room in Audi's lineup for such a model between the TT small sports car and R8 supercar.

The vehicle likely would get its own engine separate from its Porsche twins. An electrified variant also is possible, AutoBild says.

Rumors about such a vehicle have been circulating for several years. No timeframe was given for making a decision on the project or for when a production vehicle might launched.
