Audi AG says it has enhanced its 2016 A8 armored limousine to meet VR 9 ballistic protection levels, which are said to be the most stringent requirements for civilian high-security vehicles. The previous armored A8 was designed to meet the less severe VR 7 standard.

The VR 9 bulletproof rating, which is determined by Europe's VPAM association of ballistic testing institutes, indicates that a vehicle can withstand at least three shots from an M60 machine gun from 33 feet and shots from military-grade weapons such as an M14 rifles from the same distance. The new armored Audi sedan, dubbed the Audi A8 L Security, also is capable of handling a 15-kilo TNT blast from less than seven feet away, according to Audi.

Based on the long-wheelbase version of the A8, the new limousine's safety cell is fortified with aramid fabric (the same material used in body armor) and special aluminum alloys and hot-formed steel to prevent bullets and shrapnel from entering the passenger compartment. The car also is equipped with bulletproof glass, run-flat tires and an intercom to communicate to people outside the vehicle. Additional options include an emergency fresh-air system, fire extinguisher and an emergency exit.

Engine choices and interior amenities are the same as for the standard long-wheelbase A8. Deliveries are due to begin by next spring.
