Aston Martin Lagonda Ltd. and Daimler AG's Mercedes-AMG unit have agreed to partner on powertrains and technology.
The companies expect to finalize the alliance by year-end. Under the deal, Aston Martin will receive engines from Mercedes-AMG and electric and electronic components from Daimler's Mercedes-Benz Cars unit.
In exchange, Daimler will acquire 5% of Aston Martin in several steps over an unspecified period as the partnership develops. Daimler also will be given "observer status" on Aston Martin's board.
Aston Martin said in January it was looking for a partner to co-develop high-performance engines. The company also had been in extended talks with Daimler about producing the next-generation Maybach ultra-luxury car for the German carmaker, but those discussions ended abruptly in late 2011.
