U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July, the biggest one-month gain since February, according to the Dept. of Labor.
But the unemployment rate, which is calculated using a separate survey, edged up to 8.3% from 8.2% in June.
Private employers add 172,000 jobs, including 25,000 in the manufacturing sector. But those gains were partially offset by a 9,000-job drop in government employment.
The persistently weak jobs market is dampening economic growth and making consumers wary of buying big-ticket items such as autos, analysts say.
