General Motors Co. may move commercial van “cutaway” production from its truck plant in Wentzville, Mo., to Indiana-based contractor AM General.
The shift would enable the factory to hike output of hot-selling midsize Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickups, Automotive News reports.
Cutaways—vans with cabs on a bare frame—are used by makers of specialty vehicles, such as ambulances. AN says GM circulated a note to workers at Wentzville saying the company is pondering a “partnership” with AM General to take over the plant’s output of cutaway Chevy Express and GMC Savana cargo vans.
AM General, which once made the Hummer SUV for GM, currently assembles the Mercedes-Benz R-Class crossover for Daimler AG.
