Alpine Electronics Inc. is preparing to introduce an aftermarket console that will enable car owners with iPhones to use Apple Inc.'s new CarPlay infotainments system in older vehicles, The Nikkei reports.

The console will debut this autumn in the U.S. and Europe at a price of $500-$700, according to the newspaper. It says the system will be introduced in Japan as early as 2015.

The unit includes a display screen (about 7 inches) that shows familiar iPhone icons for telephone, music, maps and messages. Users can select each function using Apple's Siri voice command system, which also reads text messages aloud and can take dictation to send a message.

Apple announced CarPlay last year, and Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo are introducing the system now. Several other carmakers have announced plans to integrate the technology as a factory installed feature.
