Daimler AG’s Mercedes-AMG performance unit will standardize all-wheel drive on all next-generation vehicles.
The switch from predominately rear-wheel-drive architectures was prompted by customer demand, Mercedes-AMG chief Tobias Moers tells Autocar. He says as much as 90% of owners have opted for the technology when available on vehicles such as the AMG E-Class.
Moers attributes the preference for awd to improved stability in winter driving. But he notes that even owners of the GT supercar, which typically isn’t used as an everyday vehicle, are demanding awd.
The next-generation awd systems will be a mix of conventionally powered models and hybrid-electric systems. Vehicles with stand-alone piston engines may include a “drift” mode that allows drivers to transfer all power to the rear wheels.
