Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s new Alfa Romeo Giulia midsize sedan will come with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine in base models when it arrives in the U.S. next summer. The up-level Giulia Quadrifoglio will be powered by a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6 engine.
The new four-banger, equipped with a twin-scroll turbocharger and direct injection, will make 276 hp. It also will feature Fiat’s Multiair2 variable-valve-timing system and exhaust gas recirculation. Transmission choices haven’t been announced.
The Quadrifoglio’s Ferrari-derived V-6 is expected to make 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The twin turbocharger generates 35 psi of boost, and a cylinder deactivation system provides as much as 15% better fuel economy, according to the carmaker.
Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, the V-6 will propel the rear-drive Quadrifoglio from zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 191 mph. A dual-clutch transmission may be added later, according to media reports.
Alfa says the Quadrifoglio will have best-in-class torsional rigidity and power-to-weight ratio. It also will feature a 50:50 weight distribution riding on a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link setup in the rear.
All-wheel drive and a torque vectoring system are optional on the Quadrifoglio, which will start at $70,000 in the U.S. Pricing for the base Giulia hasn’t been announced.
