Aleris International Inc. is spending $350 million to prepare its aluminum rolling mill in Lewisport, Ky., to make 480 million pounds of aluminum auto body sheet per year.
The expansion anticipates "significant" growth in demand for aluminum by the North American auto industry as carmakers rush to hike fuel efficiency by lightening their vehicles.
Aleris will add heat treatment and finishing capabilities, along with an automotive innovation center, to the company's 50-year-old rolling mill in Kentucky. Production of automotive sheet is expected to begin in early 2017.
Cleveland, Ohio-based Aleris is a global producer of aluminum foil, extrusions, building trim and rolled metal used by the aerospace, automotive, construction, defense and packaging industries.
