European industry group ACEA predicts passenger car sales in the EU, which climbed 9% to 13.71 million units in 2015, will grow only 2% to about 14 million this year. Car sales in the region peaked at 15.5 million units in 2007.

The trade organization anticipates a similarly modest gain for commercial vehicles this year. The group says sales growth will slow but not stop in northern Europe.

ACEA passenger vehicle production in the EU increased 6% to 15.9 million units in 2015, about 1 million units short of tying the record set in 2007.
