General Motors Co. is debuting a more advanced version of its eAssist mild-hybrid system in the 2018 Buick LaCrosse sedan.

Teamed with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine, the new eAssist system can provide a 19% increase in city fuel efficiency compared with the LaCrosse’s optional 3.6-liter V-6 engine, according to the carmaker. The mild hybrid system features a compact electric motor and 24-cell, air-cooled 0.45k-Wh lithium-ion battery pack to regenerative braking, stop/start capability and electric assist that provides a 9% torque increase.

The 2018-model LaCrosse also gets active aero shutters in the front fascia to improve aerodynamics. Other goodies include expanded all-wheel drive availability and a 9-speed automatic transmission in select trim levels packaged with the V-6 engine.

The new Lacrosse will be launched in September with a starting price of $30,500.
