Mazda Motor Corp.’s next-generation CX-9 crossover vehicle will feature the company’s Kodo design language and latest Skyactiv powertrain technologies. The carmaker will unveil the 2017 model later this month at the Los Angeles auto show and launch sales next year.
A teaser image of the midsize crossover shows a streamlined body in line with other recent Mazda models and the Koeru concept crossover displayed at the Frankfurt auto show in September. The new CX-9 gets a stretched hood, fastback roofline and Mazda’s shield-shaped grille.
Power is expected to come from Mazda’s turbocharged 2.5-liter Skyactiv four-cylinder engine, which replaces the 3.7-liter V-6 in the current CX-9. The carmaker introduced the fuel efficient engine along with new 6-speed automatic transmissions as part of its Skyactiv suite of fuel-efficient technologies in 2011. The CX-9, which was launched in 2007, is the last model in Mazda’s lineup to go Skyactiv.
