General Motors Co. says it will debut a safety system on its 2016 Chevrolet Malibu models to help parents reinforce safe driving habits in their kids.
General Motors Co. says it will debut a safety system on its 2016 Chevrolet Malibu models to help parents reinforce safe driving habits in their kids.
Teen Driver gives parents access to data about distance driven, highest speed reached and how many times safety features such as antilock brakes and stability control are activated.
Parents can activate a feature that provides a visual warning and sounds a chime if their teen driver exceeds a pre-set maximum speed between 40 mph and 75 mph. At the end of the trip, parents can view how many times the warnings were activated. They also can check whether the driver triggered forward collision alerts and brake warnings.
The Teen Driver system mutes the radio if front-seat passengers aren't buckled up. Parents also can control maximum radio volume.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that the crash rate per mile driven for teens drivers are is three times higher than any other age group.
