General Motors Co. has unveiled a mid-cycle freshening for the 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck ahead of an all-new model due two years from now. The updates include an exterior facelift, a new transmission and improved smartphone connectivity.
Up front, the fullsize Chevy gets updated grilles that vary by trim line, along with LED headlights and a more sculpted hood. Front and rear lights wrap around the truck's corners to create a more streamlined look, and the front lights are integrated into the various grille treatments.
The interior will include an improved version of GM's MyLink infotainment system. Apple CarPlay smartphone connectivity will allow select information and images from a user's phone to also be shown on the in-vehicle display. Models equipped with a 7-inch display also will support Android Auto. Wireless phone charging also is available on select models.
Buyers will continue to have a choice among three engines: a 4.3-liter V-6, a 5.3-liter V-8 and the top-of-the-line 6.2-liter V-8, which makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Availability of GM's new 8-speed automatic transmission, previously offered only with the larger V-8, now extends to the smaller eight-cylinder engine.
Safety-related options include forward collision alert, lane-keep assist and high-beam assist. Buyers also can opt for a remote locking tailgate system and power articulating running boards. The latter extend to improve entry into the cab and swing rearward for easier access to the bed.
