A court in Gurgaon, India, has levied life sentences against 13 former Maruti-Suzuki India Ltd. workers found guilty of murder in a violent protest nearly five years ago in which a company manager died.
The fatality occurred in July 2012 after workers ransacked and burned administrative and security offices at Maruti’s assembly plant in Gurgaon. Maruti said at the time that the manager who died was trapped in a fire set by the workers after his arms and legs had been broken.
Police, who arrested 100 workers, reported at least 70 others administrative staffers were injured in the melee. The facility had experienced three strikes in the previous year over the company’s use of lower-paid contract workers.
