Cadillac's new ATS-V sport sedan will debut next spring with the brand's first twin-turbocharged engine.

The 3.6-liter V-6 powerplant makes an estimated 455 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque. A 6-speed manual gearbox is standard, and an 8-speed automatic is optional.

The Tremec TR6060 manual transmission is equipped with active rev matching that blips the throttle during downshifts. A no-lift shift feature enables the driver the keep the accelerator floored without over-revving the engine as the clutch pedal is depressed for each gear change. Finally, a launch control system maximizes acceleration.

Still, the Hydra-Matic 8L90 automatic gearbox is faster. Cadillac says the unit's additional gears and ultra-quick shifting enables the ATS-V to leap from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of more than 185 mph.

The car's turbochargers feature titanium-aluminide turbines that reduce rotating inertial load 51%. The units enable very fast spooling, which reduces turbo lag, and provide 18 lbs of boost. Each turbocharger has its own vacuum-actuated wastegate to improve response and smoothness.

The turbocharging system also features an unusual water-to-air charge cooling system in place of a conventional remotely mounted heat exchanger. The configuration shortens the distance between the compressors and the centrally mounted throttle body, further contributing to short response time.
