PSA Group has signed a letter of intent with Los Angeles-based Divergent Technologies Inc. covering multiple joint development programs related to that company’s 3D-printing technology.

Divergent says it has developed a software-hardware platform enabled by 3D printing that "radically transforms" the economics and environmental impact of designing and manufacturing cars and other complex structures. Its “Node” system involves 3D-printed joints that the company says enables carbon fiber structural parts to be quickly connected and assembled. Divergent demonstrated the technology last year with its 1,400-lb Blade show car.

By employing Divergent’s technology in its processes, PSA aims to “dramatically” scale down the size and scope of its manufacturing footprint. It also expects to reduce vehicle weight and build complexity, while improving design flexibility.

Divergent will begin by making prototype parts for PSA. Over time, the carmaker plans to expand 3D-printing to some production parts and eventually vehicle structures. No timeframe was provided.

Paris-based Altran Technologies SA made an unspecified investment in Divergent earlier this month. Altran also provides engineering development services to PSA.
