The VW Cargo Bike

We’ve got to give Dr. Thomas Sedran, Chairman of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Brand's Board of Management, a whole lot of credit for being engaged with the vehicles that his operation developed. Just look at him at the IAA Commercial Vehicles event in Hannover last week, riding on the VW Cargo e-Bike, a three-wheel cargo carrier that was developed as an in-house project:

The Cargo e-Bike has a capacity of up to 210 kg (462 pounds) including the driver. The cargo carrier has a volume capacity of 0.5-cubic meters (17.7-cubic feet).

It isn’t all pedal power as there is a 250-Watt electric motor and an automatic gearbox to supplement the rider’s efforts.

As Sedran put it, “Our Cargo e-Bike brings together all of the known usage and ride properties to make a perfect product.” We always thought that the Golf was closer to perfection, but then we’ve never encountered this tricycle.

It should be pointed out that Sedran also showed off other vehicles of a more conventional nature, such as electrically powered vans developed with ABT, the c-Caddy and the e-Transporter, as well as a couple of concept commercial vehicles, the I.D. BUZZ CARGO and the Crafter HyMotion.
