ZF TRW's Rear-Seat Airbags
Safety systems for front-seat occupants have steadily advanced to include multiple airbags and seatbelts that tighten automatically just before a crash.
Safety systems for front-seat occupants have steadily advanced to include multiple airbags and seatbelts that tighten automatically just before a crash. But not all these advanced systems have been available for rear seat occupants.
Now that is changing, thanks to partnering work between researchers at ZF TRW and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute. Results address the special challenges of designing and deploying frontal airbags for rear-seat occupants.
This video describes and illustrates their collaborative work. Participants are Steven Peterson, director of engineering for the North American region at ZF TRW; Matthew Reed, research head for the Biosciences Group at UMTRI; and Jingwen Hu, associate research scientist at UMTRI.
