Construction Spending Increases 6.5% in April 2014

The rate of growth to start 2014 is virtually the strongest period of growth in real construction spending since the recovery began in early 2012.

According to the Census Bureau, the value of construction put in place in April 2014 was $76,263 (millions of real dollars). Compared to one year ago, spending in April was up 6.5%. The rate of growth to start 2014 is virtually the strongest period of growth in real construction spending since the recovery began in early 2012. While the month-ove-rmonth rate of growth remains relatively strong, this is the slowest rate of growth since December 2013. The annual rate of growth was unchanged from last month but remained at its fastest rate of growth since October 2013.  Real construction spending is a good leading indicator for construction materials, hardware, and HVAC industrial production.
