ZF Friedrichshafen AG says it will introduce a knee airbag with a fabric housing next year for an unnamed European carmaker.
The industry-first fabric housing will help reduce the airbag system’s weight by 30% compared with a traditional metal housing knee airbag, ZF says. The design also is smaller and allows for more flexible packaging.
ZF says it will produce the fabric-based knee airbag with a new manufacturing process that allows for more precise package configurations that enhance the airbag’s quality and performance. The fabric housing will be configurable for all markets and light vehicle ranges, according to the company.
