Alfa exited the U.S. market in 1995, and Fiat has been promising its return since 2003.
In 2008 Alfa began selling a few of its limited-edition $240,000 8C Competizione supercars through Maserati dealers. But plans for higher-volume models appear to have changed continuously.
Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said nine months ago that the compact Alfa 4C premium sports car "for sure" would lead the return by year-end.
