Shanghai-based Yanfeng Automotive Interiors plans to move its North American headquarters from Plymouth, Mich., to nearby Novi.
Yanfeng will invest $8.5 million to renovate its new building, a former medical facility, and create a technical center. The company is receiving a $600,000 grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. for the project.
Yanfeng Automotive was formed in 2015 as a joint venture between Yanfeng Automotive Trim Systems Co. Ltd. and Johnson Controls Inc.’s interior business (spun-off as Adient Ltd. last year). The company makes instrument panels and cockpit systems, door panels, floor consoles, overhead consoles, lighting and decorative trim.
Some 200 workers from the Plymouth site, which will be closed, and another 80 from Yanfeng’s plant in Harrison Township, Mich., plant will move to Novi. The supplier expects to hire an additional 60 people there in coming years.
Yanfeng employs more than 30,000 people at about 100 manufacturing plants and technical centers in 18 countries. About 1,300 people are located at the company’s 11 Michigan facilities.
