Workers at Volkswagen AG's Hanover, Germany, plant want the company to build a new model at the facility to protect jobs because it may lose an order for Porsche's next-generation Panamera high-performance sedan.
Hanover employs 14,000 workers who build the VW T5 multivan, the Amarok pickup truck and bodies for the Panamera.
VW-owned Porsche may perform welding and painting operations for the next Panamera at its factory in Leipzig, sources tell Reuters.
Hanover is operating at no more than 70% of capacity and needs an additional model if its Panamera work is moved to Leipzig, Thomas Zweibler, head of the Hanover plant's works council, tells the news service. VW declined to comment.
