Volkswagen AG has formally launched a 9.5-megawatt solar park in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The 33,600-module array is VW's largest anywhere and is, according to the company, the biggest solar installation operated by any carmaker in America.

VW predicts the 32-acre facility will deliver about 13.1 gigawatt-hours of energy per year. That's enough to provide 12.5% of the full-capacity power demand of the company's adjacent Passat sedan assembly plant and 100% of the factory's needs when not in production.

VW partnered on the solar project with Phoenix Solar AG and Silicon Ranch Corp.
