Volkswagen AG plans an August debut in Europe for its refreshed Scirocco sport coupe. The car features a new array of more powerful engines that deliver as much as 19% better fuel economy than their predecessors.

The sporty two-door hatch will enter the European market as a 2014 model with a choice of six engines, each one turbocharged and more powerful than its predecessor. Options range across four gasoline and two diesel units. They are between 3 hp and 20 hp more powerful than their predecessors, according to the company.

The engine lineup begins with a 1.4-liter, 123-hp gasoline unit rated at nearly 44 mpg on the European driving cycle. All other engines displace 2.0 liters. They include two diesels that make 148 hp (57 mpg) and 177 hp (55 mpg). The three gasoline engines deliver 177 hp and 217 hp (both at 39 mpg) and 276 hp (29 mpg).

Among the design and technical features of the new car are LED tail lights, park assist, a black roof liner, stainless steel pedals, aluminum door sill plates, rear diffuser and a Dynaudio Excite sound system tailored specifically for the Scirocco. Alloy wheel come in 17-, 18- and 19-inch diameters.
