Volkswagen AG is developing a next-generation head-up display system that will allow information to appear much farther ahead of the vehicle than is possible with a traditional HUD.
Dubbed augmented HUD, the system can make data and pictograms appear to be as much as 50 ft ahead of the vehicle as if they are part of the road and surrounding environment, VW brand design chief Klaus Bischoff tells Autocar.
The system will use various sensor technologies to identify and display objects that otherwise can’t be seen by drivers at night, in the distance or around corners. Data from VW’s Here mapping joint venture with BMW and Daimler also could be incorporated into the displays.
The new HUD will debut in VW’s upcoming ID electric car in 2020. The technology is made possible in part by shifting the electric motor to the rear of the vehicle, which Bischoff says will allow the dashboard to be moved at least 8 inches forward.
