Volkswagen AG plans to replace its seventh-generation Golf hatchback with a significantly redesigned version in 2017, reports Auto Motor und Sport magazine.

The new Golf will be lower and wider than today's model and feature new front and rear exterior design treatments, according to the German enthusiast publication. VW introduced the current Golf in Europe in November 2012.

The next-generation model will retain VW's MQB front-drive platform but debut more fuel-efficient engines and a 50-kg lighter curb weight, according to the report. It says the car also will gain driver conveniences from the company's updated Passat sedan due this autumn, including automatic parking and braking, a head-up display and Bluetooth connectivity.

The new Golf also may offer VW's 3-cylinder engine as an option, Auto Motor und Sport says.
