Volkswagen AG plans to supply global markets—except for Europe—with a small SUV/crossover vehicle made initially in China.

CEO Herbert Diess tells reporters that the vehicle, known internally as the “Volks-SUV,” will be positioned in the company’s global lineup below the Tiguan crossover. VW already supplies that market segment in Europe with its slightly smaller T-Roc crossover.

Initial production of the China-developed model will begin in August through VW’s venture with SAIC, according to Diess. He says assembly will expand in 2020 to Argentina, Mexico and Russia.

The compact SUV will use VW’s MQB platform for vehicles with transverse-mounted front-drive engines. VW targets annual sales of 400,000 units worldwide.
