Volkswagen AG has selected semiconductor supplier Infineon Technologies AG as its first partner in the Transform 2025+ plan the carmaker announced last November.

Under the partnership, VW will work closer with Infineon to better define future semiconductor applications and implement joint development strategies. The carmaker says the program is especially critical as semiconductors and control units proliferate and become increasingly complex.

Fully electric and autonomous vehicle systems, for example, require a host of advanced power electronics, sensors and microcontrollers to safely and efficiently control a vehicle. VW says partnerships such as the one with Infineon will allow it to implement virtual prototyping and other tools to reduce development times and costs.

Current vehicles have as many as 100 networked electronic control units and thousands of electronic components. As part of the company’s broad Transform/Together-Strategy, VW plans to make significant investments to grow its EV, mobility and connectivity products through 2025.
