Volkswagen AG reports it has signed a deal with Ford Motor Co. to develop the successor to the German carmaker’s Amarok midsize pickup truck.

The current Amarok (pictured) rides on a VW-developed platform. The next-generation version is expected to share Ford’s Ranger midsize truck chassis.

VW introduced the Amarok in 2010 for the South American market. The truck currently is marketed in Europe, Mexico, South America, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Ford and VW agreed in January to co-develop and co-produce a variety of light commercial vehicles and midsize pickups. The co-developed vehicles will be marketed under each company’s own brand. Sales oare expected to begin by 2022.
