Volkswagen AG has formally launched a 9.5-megawatt solar facility adjacent to its car plant in Chattanooga, Tenn.
The 33,600-module array is VW's largest worldwide and the biggest solar installation operated by any carmaker in America, according to the company.
VW predicts the 32-acre facility will deliver about 13.1 gigawatt-hours of energy per year. That's enough to provide 13% of the assembly plant's power demand when building cars at full capacity and 100% of the factory's needs when production is idled.
