Volkswagen has issued a revised 2013 global sales figure, which moves it ahead of General Motors for the number two spot behind Toyota.

VW says it sold 9.73 million vehicles last year. That compares with 9.71 million reported by GM and 9.98 million posted by Toyota (including its Daihatsu and Hino affiliates).

Earlier this month, VW said it sold "over 9.7 million" vehicles. Christian Klingler, VW's global sales chief, disclosed the 9.73 million figure at an industry conference in Stuttgart, Germany, and the company confirms it. VW's figure includes vehicles from its MAN and Scania heavy-truck units.

VW has said it aims to surpass Toyota to become the world's top vehicle seller by 2018.
