This week Volkswagen AG began assembling its Tiguan SUV at the company’s factory in Aurangabad, India.
The vehicle, likely to be priced starting at about 2.5 million rupees ($38,200), will compete in the country with the Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner SUVs when it goes on sale in May. The Indian-made Tiguan, positioned as VW’s premium SUV, will be powered by a 2.0-liter, 190-hp diesel and 7-speed automatic transmission.
The Tiguan marks VW’s return to the SUV market in India. The company discontinued its imported Touareg, a larger and more expensive model, in 2014 because of disappointing sales.
