Biden chatted separately with General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. and Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne. He also spoke with U.S. Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), a staunch supporter of the American auto industry for nearly six decades.
Referring to U.S.-backed bankruptcies at GM and Chrysler, Biden declared, "We bet on you, and we won." He also praised Ford for restructuring without a government bailout.
