The Volvo XC40 compact crossover vehicle has been named this year’s European Car of the Year by a panel of 60 automotive journalists from 23 countries.

The all-new XC40, which was launched last autumn in Europe, received 325 points in the voting. Jurors praised the vehicle’s styling, performance and driving dynamics.

The XC40’s score easily topped that of the Seat Ibiza (242) and BMW 5 Series (226), which finished second and third, respectively. Other finalists included the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, Audi A8, Citroen C3 Aircross and Kia Stinger. The results were announced in conjunction with this week’s Geneva auto show.

The XC40’s victory marks the first time Volvo has taken top honors in the award, which is now in its 54th year. The brand’s 760, V40 and XC90 models were top three finalists in 1983, 2013 and 2016, respectively.
