Volvo Car Corp. has agreed to supply engines for Geely-branded vehicles made by its Chinese parent, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, sources tell Reuters.
The sources say the first such car, powered by Volvo’s new 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, is likely to debut roughly a year from now as a 2019 model. Other models that use Volvo’s 2.0-liter engine will follow, according to Reuters.
Volvo confirms that a platform designed to carry future Volvo models and those offered by Geely’s new Lynk & Co. brand also will be used by Geely-branded cars under a license agreement.
Geely, which is finalizing a deal to buy a 40.9% stake in Malaysian carmaker Proton Holdings BHd, also says it aims to share Volvo technologies in future Proton vehicles.
