Volvo Car Group says its XC90 crossover vehicle will gain the ability in late 2014 to automatically detect the edge of the road and avoid accidentally driving off it.

The technology, which Volvo describes as an industry first, does not require markings to determine where the pavement ends. The system also will be linked to adaptive cruise control capable of automatically following the vehicle ahead.

Volvo says the XD90 also will debut the world's first system capable of operating night or day to detect pedestrians, bicyclists and other vehicles and automatically apply the brakes to mitigate a collision.

The company plans to expand that system later to detect and automatically brake for animals in daylight or darkness. Volvo says the new technologies, none of which it has described in detail, are part of its mission to eliminate fatalities or serious injuries to occupants of new Volvo cars by 2020.
