Volvo Car Corp. on Wednesday began producing the all-new XC60 midsize crossover vehicle at its plant in Torslanda, Sweden.

Unveiled at the Geneva auto show in March, the second-generation XC60 is built on the scalable product architecture that also carries Volvo’s XC90 crossover, V90 wagon and S90 sedan. Exterior styling reflects Volvo’s latest design language that debuted with the slightly larger XC90.

The XC60 boasts Volvo’s latest safety technologies, including the company’s new oncoming lane mitigation system that detects potential head-on collisions and provides steering input to avoid objects. Steer assist also is coupled with the car’s blind spot indication system to help prevent the XC60 from moving into an adjoining lane already occupied by an overtaking vehicle.

Volvo’s Pilot Assist technology is available as an option. The semi-autonomous system takes over steering, throttle and brake functions at speeds as high 80 mph on roads with clear lane markings.

Several powertrain options are available, including a plug-in hybrid system that teams a turbo/supercharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that produces 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of torque.

The XC60 accounts for 30% of Volvo's global sales. Since its introduction nine years ago, The company has sold nearly 1 million XC60s worldwide since the first-generation model was launched nine years ago.
