Volvo Car Corp. has begun shipping Chinese-built S90 large sedans by rail to Europe.

The first batch of cars, which were assembled at Volvo’s plant in Daqing, arrived today at a distribution center in Zeebrugge, Belgium. Volvo says moving the cars by train reduces transport time by two-thirds compared with shipment by sea.

The flagship S90 cars are wrapped in protective plastic and loaded by threes into shipping containers. The cars will be moved via special trains that carry 120 cars at a time. Volvo, which was acquired by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Ltd. in 2010, began sending China-made stretched-wheelbase S60 sedans to the US. in 2015.
