Volvo Car Corp.’s upcoming XC40 compact crossover/SUV will include a host of new custom-sized storage systems designed to help meet changing customer needs.
The carmaker says it conducted extensive consumer research to determine how motorists use their vehicles and store belongings while driving. Based on its findings, which Volvo says were consistent around the world, the company says consumers want improved storage for cell phones, laptop computers, purses/wallets, shopping bags and other personal items.
To this end, Volvo has added several storage compartments and redesigned others for the XC40. This includes moving the audio speakers from the door—to what Volvo boasts is the first air-ventilated dashboard-mounted sub-woofer—thus increasing storage space in the door compartment to accommodate a laptop and tablet-size device and/or several beverage bottles.
Other new features include:
- a phone holder, wireless charging capability and more USB ports
- storage space under the seat that can accommodate a mini tablet
- dashboard slots for credit and service cards
- a fold-away hook under the glove compartment to hold small shopping bags
- areas for coins, cards and/or charging cables
- storage area under the center console armrest that is large enough to hold a box of facial tissues
- a removable trash bin in the center console
- an electrically actuated fold-flat rear floor
The XC40’s trunk includes a fold-up trunk divider with two hooks to help secure shopping bags or other luggage, and four load hooks for luggage. A locking storage compartment has been added under the load floor.
The additional storage areas will help secure items and prevent them from being jostled or falling over while driving, Volvo says. The company adds that the additional storage areas will enable passengers to use cupholders for their intended purpose rather than as makeshift storage units.
Volvo plans to unveil the XC40 in coming weeks. A video about the interior changes can be viewed here.

Honda Re-Imagines and Re-Engineers the Ridgeline
When Honda announced the first-generation Ridgeline in 2005, it opened the press release describing the vehicle: “The Honda Ridgeline re-defines what a truck can be with its true half-ton bed payload capability, an interior similar to a full-size truck and the exterior length of a compact truck.” And all that said, people simply couldn’t get over the way there is a diagonal piece, a sail-shaped buttress, between the cab and the box.
