Valeo SA plans to hire 290 people and invest about $5 million to upgrade and build new facilities in Michigan.

The plan includes a low-speed test track and support building in Auburn Hills. The Paris-based supplier also will make unspecified renovations to its North American headquarters in Troy. No timeframe was given for completing the work.

The Michigan Economic Development Corp. has approved a $1 million state performance-based grant for the projects. Troy and Auburn Hills will provide tax abatements and other support.

Valeo previously announced plans to add about 500 engineers in North America through early next decade. It isn't clear if the 290 is in addition to or part of that total. Valeo has innovation centers in California, Michigan and Mexico.
