Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. says it is cooperating with a federal investigation into allegations that blame its G159 motorhome tires with 95 fatalities or injuries in the U.S. over at least 20 years.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration probe was prompted by details about the tires that were unsealed in December by an Arizona judge. He agreed with a request by the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Automotive Safety and Public Justice that the risk to public safety outweighs Goodyear’s claim that the data contains sensitive competitive information.

NHTSA says it now has records of 95 reports of injuries or fatalities caused by G159 tires (pictured) that suffered tread separations or blowouts, dating back to 1998. In a letter from the agency to Goodyear that was seen by the Associated Press, NHTSA says Goodyear reported only nine claims involving one death and 13 injuries over that period.

NHTSA’s investigation targets about 40,000 tires that were produced between 1996 and 2003 and installed on motorhomes. Previous lawsuits claim G159 tires were designed for regional delivery vehicles, not RVs that spend considerable time traveling at highway speeds.

Those complaints also allege that Goodyear hid problems with the tires by settling cases and having the related records sealed by court order.
