U.S. safety officials are looking into complaints that as many as 1 million Dodge Durango SUVs and fullsize Ram pickup trucks can unexpectedly roll away after being parked, Reuters reports.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports 25 crashes and nine injuries resulting from the issue. The agency is probing possible defects in 2013-2016 Ram 1500 trucks and 2014-2016 Durango SUVs.
In April Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV recalled 1.1 million Jeep Grand Cherokee SUVs and Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300 sedans that could roll away after being parked. The problem was blamed for injuring about 70 people and causing the death of “’Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin.
Critics say the unusual “e-shifter” system in the earlier recall can confuse operators into thinking the vehicle’s transmission is in Park when it actually is still in gear. Reuters says vehicles targeted by the new investigation use a different type of gear shift mechanism.
