New-car deliveries in the U.S. appear likely to rise to 1.62 million units in March from 1.59 million in the same month last year, according to market analysts J.D. Power and LMC Automotive.
The increase is being driven by record-high retail incentives for March, which now average nearly $3,800 per sale, according to Power/LMC. The firms say incentives as a proportion of new-car list prices has climbed to 10.4%, surpassing 10% for the first time in eight years.
The two firms reiterate that they expect full-year car sales in the U.S. to rise a miniscule 0.2% to 17.6 million units this year—enough to set another record high.
