West Richland, Wash.-based SSC North America says the top speed of its revised Tuatara hypercar will “easily surpass” the current world record for a production car of 278 mph, which was set last year by a Koenigsegg Agera RS.

SSC will take the wraps off the new Tuatara on Friday during the Monterey Car Week show in California. Ahead of the event, the company has released a teaser video to showcase the car’s engine.

The original 2011 Tuatara concept car was powered by a 6.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine that generated 1,350 hp and 1,280 lb-ft of torque. That car had an estimated top speed of about 276 hp.

SSC (formerly Shelby Super Cars) was formed in 1999 by entrepreneur Jarod Shelby. The company and its founder are not related to automotive legend Carroll Shelby or any of his companies.

SSC’s Ultimate Aero held the speed record for about three years with a run of more than 255 mph. That mark was topped in 2010 by a Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport that hit 268 mph, which held the record until Koenigsegg sprinted ahead last November.
