An explosion at a wheelmaking factory in China reportedly killed 75 people and injured 185 others on Saturday, according to a revised report from the government's Xinhua news service.
The incident occurred at Kunshan Zhongrong Metal Products Co. Ltd. in Kunshan, which is roughly 600 miles southeast of Beijing. The factory supplies wheels to General Motors Co. and several other carmakers.
GM confirms that Kunshan provides wheel finishing for Citic Dicastal Co. Ltd., a Qinhuangdao City-based company that says it supplies wheels to the world's 12 largest carmakers in Japan, Europe and the U.S.
The Zhongrong blast is being described as China's worst industrial accident in a year. The local government says the explosion appears to have been triggered by a flame in a dust-filled workshop that polishes wheel rims.
Reports say five Zhongrong managers were taken by police for questioning. The Taiwanese company was created in China in 1998.
