The United Auto Workers union has confirmed Dennis Williams as its new president. Williams, 61, succeeds Bob King, 67, who has retired.
Williams has been the union's secretary-treasurer for the past four years. He joined the UAW in 1977 and spent his earlier career with locals representing workers at Case and Navistar.
Williams was heavily involved in the UAW's failed attempt to represent workers at Volkswagen AG's assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. He previously declared the union will revive efforts to organize the VW plant and other foreign-owned auto plants in the South.
Such efforts will be funded in part by a 25% hike in union dues approved by workers earlier this week. The measure also will fortify the UAW's strike fund, currently at about $630 million, as it prepares for labor negotiations with the Big Three carmakers in 2015.
